The Chinese character 则 (zé) is a formal conjunction used to express contrast or comparison between two clauses. It is quite similar in meaning to 却, but tends to sound more written, structured, or slightly formal.
Structure:
Clause 1，Subject + 则 + Predicate
则 introduces a contrasting situation in the second clause.
It highlights that while one thing is true, something different (often opposite) is true for another.
You can also combine 则 with 而 to reinforce the contrast:
